Giorgio Di Palma

Festa di compleanno

Illustration is back in Meme Gallery with an exhibition that tells how ice cream has been the icon of simple and happy moments of the Italian summers. A-abbronzatissima is a journey that goes from the 60s to the 90s, when on the Italian beach everybody could choose his ice cream on the colourful and  impressive boards of tin, which the various brands renewed nearly every year. The naming was a great exercise …piedone, winner taco, twister… everything had to be direct, winning and loving. The ice cream cake boards, which represent a piece of culture, like “Torta Patrizia”, “Viennetta”, the “Romantica”, the “Gran Carré”… were almost always the desserts of the typical Italian Sunday family lunch. The ice cream with his representation and its colorful packaging or with names which refers to the proper name of  the aunts, enters the culture of the pop image. Each illustration reminds us that ice cream has always been an important relational issue and had the power to create happiness. Watching the billboards designed by Supercandystudio, we go back to the warm Italian beaches, when people were dancing a twist with a bottle of Fanta in their hand or pointing the finger at the board to serach the favorite ice-cream and claiming: "I remember it". Supercandystudio is inspired by the Pop Art, by Carosello, by old found objects, that she collects with passion and with great attention to the trends of illustration and contemporary graphics. Alessia is honored to admit that she is inspired by Olimpia Zagnoli, Noma Bar, Malika Favre, Camille Walala, Christoph Niemann, Paula Scher, Louise Fili, and she also takes high inspirations from great masters like Nathalie Du Pasquier, Wayne Thiebaud and Milton Glaser. Alessia, as a collector also of objects belonging to Futurism, aspires in particular to the work of Fortunato Depero, to the 80s of the legendary Fiorucci brand, to the design of Memphis and the stories of iconic brands such as Algida, Sammontana, Campari ...

“The moment of greatest happiness for me, is the one immediately before the ending, during the construction process, where everything comes with power, like the inspirations, and with immediacy and spontaneity, then, you start working from scratch again and the cycle begins again " says Alessia. “Redesigning objects from the past means for me giving them a new life, the so-called “Magical plasticity” mentioned by Nathalie Du Pasquier in her book “The Strange Order of Things ", to make them immortal in our memory.

The exhibition is made by new framed illustrations and the first three acrylic canvases done by Supercandystudio.
